Udupi: Policeman seriously injured in accident near Katapadi junction

Udupi, Jul 17: An accident took place on the Udupi-Mangaluru national highway 66 near Katapadi Junction, on July 16, involving severe injuries to a police constable.

Harish Narayana Poojary was heading from Udyavar to Padubidri in his car when he stopped following police instructions. At that moment, Sushant, driving a Swift car recklessly and negligently, collided into Poojary’s car.

The collision caused damage to another car as well. As a result of the impact, Poojary’s car hit police constable Ram, who was standing in front of the vehicle. The police constable fell onto the road and sustained severe head injuries. The injured were immediately taken to Udupi Hitech Hospital.

Sushant, Vishnu, Ashika, and Harshi, who were in the Swift car, sustained minor injuries and were also taken to the hospital. The passengers in Poojary's car were unharmed.

The accident resulted in damage to three vehicles. According to the police report, the accident was caused by Sushant's reckless and negligent driving of the Swift car.

    Sad the Police got injured.He could have stood at side but not in front.They too should learn how to behave and where to stand.Of course person who came by high speed should be punished.He should have lessen his speed by seeing Police is checking.May be he wanted to slip off?Too many vehicles on roads and no speed control.Why not put signals at points where turns or junctions?People will automatically slow down.May be Police too wanted to collect ?some money by checking simply ?Wish him all the best and recovery.

    Reckless drivers are all over mangalore and Udupi. Even after so many incidences they do not learn from anything. Our RTO systems are also such poor that, they do not want any traffic signals installed in these major critical areas. When the traffic signals are there, these are at least visibile from few yards and the people can slow down (if they have sense) and avoid such accidents at least to some extent. When manually these are handled due to low visibility, one has to be dependent on the previous drivers car signal which many times people dont see and results in tragic end. Sad that the innocent peoples lives is ended. Its lesson to all, that everyones life is precious. Why so much of hurry for every driver? please go at moderate speed in this rainy season and especially at the roads which are in city junction and save lives. God will surely bless you all.

    It is better to equip traffic policemen with cricket player like helmets... They are light as compared to two wheeler helmets... Such incidents can never be ruled out in any junction....

    What I have observed in recent times is police personnel halt vehicle for checking in busy intersection and also roads which are not even main roads. They come suddenly onto the roads to stop bikes people in a bid to get away harm some one else or a personel. The cameras have been installed why don't u send notices to their homes instead.

    Katpadi is a junction and usually police officers stop the cars to maintain the traffic as it’s a 4 way dividing road rather than document checking
