Mangaluru, Jul 23: To savour the fun of playing in the rain, the Angelore unit of Young Catholic Students (YCS) organised 'Monsoon Splash 2024', a fun-filled monsoon games event on July 21. From the children studying in 1st standard to the senior citizens, there were games for everyone.
The event was inaugurated by Fr Fredrick Monteiro, parish priest, by unfolding a beautifully decorated umbrella symbolising monsoon and carrying the theme of the event. Socius vicar Fr Stany Fernandes, brother Wilson, parish council president Paul Rodrigues, secretary Lolina D’Souza, 21 commission coordinator and YCS animator Renita Menezes, YCS animator Roshan Patrao, Vincent Roche, YCS president Leon D’Souza were present on the dais for the inauguration. The members of YCS set prelude to the games with breathtaking flash mob.
The games included cutting the newspaper into long strips, spoon and lemon race, writing names on balloon, picking confetti with straw, filling water into the glass with hand, busting balloons tied to legs, sack race, peeling coconuts, making broom from coconut leaves, threading the needle and spot dance. The stars of the event were participants for peeling the coconuts and making broom from coconut leaves, which saw stiff competition among the participants amid cheering of the audience. These two events along with threading the needle saw the highest number of participants, showing that given the opportunity, the seniors can compete shoulder to shoulder with the youth. Ten teams participated in the spot dance competition, heavy downpour notwithstanding. The event came to an end with ubiquitous baila.
More than 350 parishioners young and old alike participated in the event. Leon D’Souza, president of YCS Angelore welcomed the gathering; Sheldon Menezes, secretary gave the vote of thanks; and Shalom D’Souza and Daryl Monteiro compered the programme.
