Islamabad, Nov 4 (IANS): "Business as usual is unacceptable" was the stern message from Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to the country's national carrier that has to undergo restructuring.
Gilani, while chairing a meeting on restructuring of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Thursday, reviewed proposals and directed the Cabinet Committee on Restructuring to give final recommendations combining improvements in corporate governance, services and financing requirements.
"Business as usual is unacceptable," Associated Press of Pakistan quoted the prime minister as saying.
All is not well with PIA and President Asif Ali Zardari had last month called for the implementation of a reform plan to tone it up. The plan called for arresting rising liabilities, stemming general decline and converting PIA into a profitable organisation.
Gilani constituted a committee led by Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Sheikh that will submit a report to him within a week outlining a road-map for making turnaround in PIA.
He sought viable recommendations aimed at making PIA to stand on its own feet and compete with other international airlines.
The restructuring of the airline will incorporate professionalism, autonomy to the board of directors and no bureaucratic impediments in decision making, said the prime minister.
