Kundapur, Jul 27: Actor, director, and international magician Om Ganesh Uppunda emphasised the vital role of journalists in society.

"Commitment to society, knowledge, and information are the essence of a journalist’s work. They sacrifice for themselves and live for the world. Society should recognize their contributions," Uppunda stated.

He spoke at the Press Day celebration held at Jaycee Bhavan in the city. Uppunda noted, “Journalism has undergone many changes. While patience was once a hallmark, today’s media struggles to keep pace with the fast-moving world. Journalism is considered the fourth estate of democracy, yet journalists' salaries do not match even those of primary school teachers.”

He also urged journalists to value their own talents, saying, “Journalists should reflect on their own well-being. There is exceptional talent among journalists that should be nurtured and given time.”

The event was presided over by Nagaraja Rayappanamata, president of the Kundapur Taluk Working Journalists' Association. Senior journalist Sripati Hegde Hakladi was honoured for his contributions.

Super Grade electrical contractor K R Naik praised the significance of journalism, saying, “The work of journalists is of prime importance, and their contributions to the media are invaluable.”

The assistant superintendent of post, Kundapur, provided information on postal insurance schemes. After receiving his honour, Sripati Hegde Hakladi reiterated the need to recognise rural achievers in journalism. “Many journalists have made significant contributions to society that deserve recognition,” he said.

The event was attended by association treasurer T Lokesh Acharya Thekkatte and vice-president Chandrama Tallur. Principal Secretary Ganesh S Beejadi welcomed the attendees and gave a vote of thanks. Prashanth Paade read the honour letter, and Srikant Hemmady served as the event’s compere. Contributors to the programme were also recognised.

The Kundapur postal department facilitated Aadhar registration and amendments, as well as comprehensive accident insurance scheme registrations during the event.
