Udupi, Jul 29: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has directed City Municipality officials to take immediate action in response to the significant damage caused by recent heavy rains and winds. The severe weather resulted in extensive public property damage, potholes on roads, inadequate drainage, and other issues within the municipality.
During a meeting with officials at the Udupi City Municipality, MLA Suvarna instructed that major potholes on city roads be filled to ensure smooth traffic flow. He emphasized the need for the immediate clearing of roadside debris before upcoming festival processions, removal of encroachments on canals affected by artificial flooding, and action to remove dangerous trees.
MLA Suvarna also proposed reserving time every Wednesday for senior citizens' meetings, planning a new bus stand with commercial complexes and parking facilities in the old Vishweshwara market area, and expediting tendered works. He stressed the importance of proper maintenance of streetlights.
Highlighting the damage caused by the natural disaster, Suvarna reported an estimated loss of around Rs 25 crore in public property and urged the government to address the situation. In rural areas of Udupi and Brahmavar taluks, about 55 houses were damaged.
Although the Revenue Department has approved only Rs 10,03,500 in relief, Suvarna called on the state government to immediately sanction Rs 5 lac for fully damaged houses and Rs 3 lakh for partially damaged houses, as was done previously.
The meeting was attended by municipal council members, the commissioner, and other officials.
