Mangaluru, Jul 29: Former MLA Mohiudeen Bava has retaliated against remarks made by mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur and local corporator Varun Chowta concerning the Surathkal market.

Bava stated, “The work on Surathkal market began seven years ago, but progress has stalled entirely since my tenure as MLA. The mayor and corporator Chowta are misleading the public with their comments about the market.”

He highlighted that during his tenure, he secured funds amounting to Rs 60 crore for the Surathkal market—more than any other market in his constituency. Bava claimed that the previous MLA and minister had demanded a high commission from the contractor, causing the contractor to abandon the project midway.

Responding to the mayor’s allegations of urgency regarding the Surathkal market work, Bava said, “It is not a matter of urgency but rather a government project. The current MLA is deceiving people with caste-based politics. Those who came to power under the guise of Hindu religion have failed to deliver.”

Bava also criticized the allocation of funds, asserting that Rs 58 crore designated for a road leading to a temple in Katipalla was redirected to other projects, leaving only Rs 18 crore for the intended work, thereby deceiving the public.

He condemned the MLA’s inaction following recent rain damage that affected 25 houses and a school, accusing him of prioritizing religion-based politics over addressing these issues. Bava noted that while the MLA visited the residence of a particular religious community and assured compensation, there is no strong leadership to challenge the MLA’s actions. He added, “When I was in Congress, I openly criticized the MLA for his mistakes.”
