Kerala CM seeks Army's help in Wayanad, death toll reaches 44

Wayanad, Jul 30 (IANS): With the death toll in the massive landslides at Churalpara in Kerala's Wayanad on Tuesday rising to 44 and hundreds of people stranded, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday sought help from the Indian Army's Bengaluru-headquartered Madras Engineering Group.

The MEG is known for setting up temporary infrastructure very quickly. The state authorities with the help of NDRF have already started work to set up a temporary bridge in Churalpara.

CM Vijayan has also asked for drones to be employed in the worst affected areas -- Churalpara, Velarimala, Mundakayil and Pothukalu.

According to the locals, in these areas, the destruction has been massive. Several houses were washed away and many roads collapsed. Hundreds of people waited for help to arrive after a bridge was washed away. Huge boulders rolled down the hills and hindered the path of rescue workers at several places. Vehicles washed away in floodwaters could be seen stuck in mud and tree trunks.

CM Vijayan has also asked for the Kerala Police Dog squad to reach the affected areas.

The police have set up a 24-hour control room and the phone numbers are -- 9497900402, 0471 2721566.

The landslides were reported to have occurred at around 2 a.m.

Wayanad, Jul 30 (IANS): The death toll in the massive landslides at Churalpara in Kerala's Wayanad on Tuesday reached 41, said the district authorities. The landslides were reported to have occurred at around 2 a.m.

Due to the inclement weather, two Helicopters were unable to land in the affected landslide areas and are now waiting at Kozhikode.

The two helicopters arrived with men and materials for commencing rescue operations but will have to wait to land in the affected areas.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday morning after having discussions with top Kerala State Disaster Management Authority ( KSDMA) officials in the state capital city told the media that information about the landslide-affected areas was trickling in and at the moment it was a bit early to say more he also said that the Air Force is joining the rescue mission..

According to reports around 400 families are trapped in a few areas at Churalmala.

State Health Minister Veena George said all the available health officials in and around the district are being asked to join the operations as there are reports of several getting injured.

“We have started to ensure that all medical supplies are being transported to the affected areas and in the hospitals in the area. Medical teams from Kannur and Kozhikode will be reaching out to speed up treatment of the injured people. At the moment 70 injured are being treated at a few hospitals in Wayanad,” said Minister George.

Earlier, Kerala Chief Secretary V. Venu told local media, "Around 2 a.m., landslides took place at least two to three times. At this point, few affected areas are cut off. The weather is also adverse for NDRF teams to go to some of these affected areas. Everyone is on alert. We will carry out the rescue in a coordinated manner. We are still ascertaining about how many people are trapped. All options, including airlifting people, are being looked into to ensure rescue work is carried out."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday and assured him of all possible Central assistance following the massive landslides in the Wayanad district, in which 41 people have died.

"Distressed by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured. Rescue ops are currently underway to assist all those affected. Spoke to Kerala CM Shri @pinarayivijayan and also assured all possible help from the Centre in the wake of the prevailing situation there," PM Modi posted on X.

But; these landslides occurring throughout the country are mostly due to rampant felling of old forested trees and cutting of hills vertically and leveling for agriculture and homestay purposes; this has been occurring only in places where major alterations have been done in the naturally occurring topography; last year there were major landslides in Madikeri region due to the same reason, this season a major one on the Shiroor national highway, forget the numerous small ones that have occurred throughout DK..... purely man made disasters due to greedy.....why to involve the Creator in between! 😞😞😔 🙏

Very true. I have a cousin who works as a chef in a resort in Wayanad. And he mentioned how over the last 12-18 years, resorts have come up left right and center completely disregarding clearance, laws etc. creating these resorts leads to felling of tress, landscaping artifical foundations etc. all leading to loose soil and imbalance in the composition. Result such tragedies over and over and over and dare i say..not the last time 😭😭to

@Ashwin; I have been writing vigorously on various social platforms regarding the potential of massive landslides since years after a very huge landslide wiped out an entire village in the outskirts of Pune in less than an hour! Much against my perception, I think this will only worsen in the years to come as the soil loosens, more old forests are hacked, and small fissures in the laterite hills widen up due to major climate changes; even small seismic changes occurring deep below can trigger a landslide! All in all, 90% of these landslides are purely manmade and cursing or invoking some Gods 🤔! Hope better sense prevails! 😔😞🙏
