Puttur, Aug 13: St Philomena College celebrated the 132nd birth anniversary of Padmashree S R Ranganathan, the father of library science, with a special celebration of national librarian’s day on Tuesday, August 12 at the PG Seminar Hall.

The event, organized by the St Philomena College library and information centre, was graced by college vice principal Dr Vijayakumar Moleyar as the chief guest and college principal Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, who presided over the event.

In his address, Dr Vijayakumar Moleyar, vice principal of the college emphasized the vital role of books in shaping human values and personality. “Just as water, air, light, and food are essential for life, books and reading are important for the development of a well-rounded individual.

The library is a cornerstone of the education system, housing the wisdom of great minds. Dr S R Ranganathan’s contributions to the development of library science in India are unparalleled, and celebrating his legacy is the essence of librarian’s day. By cultivating the habit of reading, students not only gain knowledge but also contribute significantly to societal progress,” Dr Moleyar remarked.

Principal Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, in his presidential address, highlighted the matchless value of books in the digital age. “Smartphones and the internet can never substitute the experience of reading a book. Unlike digital distractions, books offer a focused and enriching experience. By reading books on personality development, students can cultivate a well-rounded character,” Dr Monteiro stated.

Also present on stage was Dr Malini K, the coordinator of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the college. The programme began with a warm welcome from Abdul Rahman, selection grade librarian of the college, followed by a vote of thanks from Manohar S G, the librarian of the postgraduate department.

Srimani, assistant professor in the department of social work, compered. Ashritha K M, assistant professor in the department of mathematics rendered prayer. Staff members Zeeta Noronna and Catherine Crasta provided additional support to ensure the success of the students.
