Mangaluru: Awareness on International Breastfeeding Week organised by FMHMC

Mangaluru, Aug 14: On International Breastfeeding Week, the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College (FMHMC) organised a Breastfeeding Week awareness talk and role play on the theme 'Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All'.

The programme was conducted at three locations: Lady Goschen Hospital on August 5, the Urban Community Health Centre, Ullal, on August 8, and Concetta Hospital, Kinnigoli, on August 11.

On August 5 at Lady Goschen Hospital

The programme at Lady Goschen Hospital commenced with a prayer song, invoking God’s blessings. This was followed by the lighting of the lamp and the unveiling of the logo for Breastfeeding Week 2024. The event was graced by several dignitaries, including: Dr Durga Prasad M R, medical superintendent and IAS officer, Dr Shravan Kumar, Dr Thimmaiah, Dakshina Kannada health and family welfare officer, Dr Rajesh, resident physician, Dr Jagadish, Dr Balakrishna Rao, child health specialist, Dr Nutan Kamat, KMC Hospital, Dr Vilma M D'Souza, vice-principal, Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College and Shilpa, lecturer at City Nursing College.

Dr Vilma D'Souza, vice-principal, professor, and HoD of obstetrics and gynaecology, highlighted the significance of World Breastfeeding Week, emphasising the importance and benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and newborns. During the programme, ten mothers who had donated the highest amount of breast milk were felicitated by Dr Vilma D'Souza and Shilpa.

The event concluded with a role play by students of Father Muller Homoeopathic College and City Nursing Vidyalaya, demonstrating the importance of breastfeeding and the role of family support in breastfeeding.

On August 8 at Urban Community Health Centre, Ullal

The programme at the Urban Community Health Centre, Ullal, featured a talk by Dr Vilma D'Souza on the importance and method of breast feeding. Dr Tara, a paediatrician from Yenepoya Hospital, and Dr Sahana Prabhu, AYUSH medical officer also were present.

Students from Father Muller Homoeopathic College Hospital, Deralakatte, performed a role play to raise awareness about breastfeeding.

On August 11 at Concetta Hospital, Kinnigoli

The event at Concetta Hospital, Kinnigoli, began with a prayer song and the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries: Dr Venkatesh Hegde, vice dean of Father Muller Medical College, Dr Vilma D'Souza, vice-principal of Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College, Dr Sr Jevitha, professor at Concetta Hospital, Kinnigoli, and Sr Clara Jyothi were present.

The students from Father Muller Homoeopathic College Hospital, Deralakatte, once again performed a role play to promote awareness about breastfeeding.

Each event successfully highlighted the theme of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, 'Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All', and emphasised the crucial role of community and family support in ensuring successful breastfeeding practices.
