Udupi, Aug 15: The Lombard Group of Institutions, in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society Blood Center Kundapura and the Karnataka State Medical Representatives Organisation Udupi Unit, organized a blood donation camp today to commemorate the 78th Independence Day of India.

Jayaker Shetty, chairman of the Red Cross Blood Bank in Udupi District, and the chief guest of the event, highlighted the significance of the occasion, stating, "This 78th Independence Day is the perfect occasion to donate blood, as countless unsung heroes have sacrificed their blood for the nation. One unit of blood can save three lives, but in India, there is a yearly requirement of 5 crore units, and only 2.5 crore units are fulfilled. Every day, the country needs 38,000 blood units." He emphasized the need for more donors to meet the country's demands and thanked the attendees for their participation.

Dr Sushil Jathanna, director of Lombard Memorial Hospital, Udupi, wished everyone a happy Independence Day and encouraged the youth to donate more blood. He informed the students that "men can donate their blood up to four times a year, and women up to three times." He also raised concerns about the spread of dengue and the subsequent need for platelets. Dr Sushil thanked Jayaker Shetty and the Red Cross Blood Bank for providing the students with an opportunity to contribute to such a vital cause.

The event begun with the hoisting of the national flag, followed by the singing of patriotic songs and the national anthem. Awards were distributed to individuals who donated the most blood units, recognizing their commitment to this noble cause.
