Third edition of Canara Marathon Freedom Run held in Udupi

Udupi, Aug 15: The Canara Bank Circle Office Manipal organized the third edition of the Canara Marathon Freedom Run with the theme of women empowerment on the occasion of Independence Day, August 15.

The marathon featured four categories: 3 km, 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km. Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna inaugurated the 10 km run. In his address, he praised Canara Bank for its efforts in promoting youth participation through marathons and highlighted the importance of the women empowerment theme.

Rakesh Nainwal, GM of Canara Bank, emphasized the importance of fitness and unity, stating, "The main aim is to convey that unless we are fit, we cannot reach our goals, and the marathon shows unity. You are competitors for yourselves."

The marathon run was inaugurated by releasing tricolored balloons into the sky. Other dignitaries, including Dr Roshan Shetty, Assistant Director of Youth Affairs; Dr Girish Menon, Neurosurgeon; and Professor Arpitha Shetty, participated in the event. A flag hoisting ceremony was also held.

During the event, Dr Narendra, orthopedic surgeon, stressed the importance of mobility and health, particularly for women, in today's digital era. Kota Srinivas Poojary, MP, inaugurated the 5 km run, while Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor of MAHE, inaugurated the 3 km run, both underscoring the significance of physical fitness.

Akshatha Poojary, a powerlifter, encouraged participation, stating, "Sports is not about winning; it is about participation. Winning encourages further participation, and losing makes one stronger."

Jayaprakash C, general manager of Canara Bank Circle Office Manipal, extended his wishes for the 78th Independence Day and encouraged active participation in the celebrations, highlighting the role of such events in fostering health and unity within society.

Several other dignitaries, including Dr Deepak Ram Bairy, Krishna Prasad GM, Prof Sharath Alva, and Shreenath Joshi, shared their thoughts and best wishes on the occasion.

Honorees included Anusha Shetty of Dolce Dessert, Sarita Santhosh, founder of Sunshine Travel Manipal, and others for their contributions.

The marathon featured a patriotic performance by students of Udupi Group of Institutions and a Zumba activity to warm up the participants.

The event saw participation from bank officials, officers, students from various institutions, retired officers, and the public. Radha Krishnan served as the master of ceremonies. Winners were awarded exciting cash prizes.
