Sullia, Aug 19: A herd of wild elephants has been destroying crops within the limits of Sampaje gram panchayat for the past three days.
The herd has damaged arecanut, coconut, and plantain crops belonging to Devaragunda Sheshappa, Chandrashekhara, and Harish of Chadavu.
The wild elephants have been entering the farms by descending through rubber plantations in the forest under the Kodagu limits. Nearby bamboo and palm trees also attract the pachyderms. A similar incident occurred three years ago when wild elephants raided this area.
Farm owners burst crackers on Friday and waited for the elephants until midnight. As the elephants were not spotted, they went to sleep. However, they were shocked to find the crops destroyed in the morning. The elephants had attacked after the farm owners had gone to bed.
