Puttur: St Philomena College weightlifters shine at state level, advance to nationals

Puttur, Aug 19: Several students from St Philomena College have made a strong impression at the state-level weightlifting competition, organized by the Karnataka State Weightlifters’ Organisation in Bengaluru. Held at SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Mysuru, on August 17 and 18, the event saw these talented athletes securing medals and earning the prestigious opportunity to compete at the national level.

Spandana (II BSc) delivered a standout performance, earning the title of best lifter and clinching the gold medal in the 45 kg category. Her incredible lifts included a snatch of 59 kg and a clean and jerk of 73 kg. Her success has paved the way for her selection to the national level weightlifting competition.

In the 96 kg category, Shabareesh Rai (III BCom) dominated the field, taking home the gold medal with an impressive snatch of 125 kg and a clean and jerk of 145 kg and also advance towards the national stage.

Ranjith Kumar M (II BA) claimed the gold medal in the 109 kg category, lifting a snatch of 107 kg and a clean and jerk of 140 kg. His dedication and effort have earned him a spot in the national competition as well.

Meanwhile, in the 64 kg category, Beulah PT (II MCom) secured the silver medal with a snatch of 67 kg and a clean and jerk of 93 kg. Her achievement has also qualified her for the national-level competition.

Finally, Yathish K (III BCom) showcased his strength in the 96 kg category, winning the bronze medal with a snatch of 105 kg and a clean and jerk of 126 kg.

Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, principal of St Philomena College, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the star athletes, along with their dedicated coaches, Jayaprakash Rai and Ashwath, as well as the physical education director, Dr Elias Pinto, for their exceptional training and support.
