Karkala, Aug 22: A student from a private college here fell from a moving bus and died near Nitte on Wednesday.

Janit Shetty (19), a second-year BSc student, was killed in the accident. He was traveling on a private bus from Karkala to Mangaluru in the morning when he was thrown onto the road and came under the back wheels of the bus.

Janit, who was seriously injured, received first aid at a local hospital and was then rushed to Manipal for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Janit is survived by his mother and younger sister..

The alarming situation with some private buses in our district. These so-called "killer buses" are recklessly endangering lives by overcrowding their vehicles. In their relentless pursuit of profit, they are allowing nearly double the number of passengers than the bus can safely accommodate. This dangerous practice forces students and other passengers to stand at the footboard, putting their lives at severe risk. The motive is clear: to fill their pockets at the cost of people's safety and well-being. The safety of our community must come first. I urge the authorities and concerned individuals to take swift action to address this serious issue before more lives are put in jeopardy.

Nitte College offers an ample number of buses at nominal fees, yet the facility is not being utilized effectively by students. The buses lack doors, and from 8:20 to 9:00 AM, they become overcrowded, despite some buses having available space around 8:00 AM. However, students still prefer to take the express buses during peak hours, leading to congestion. This situation reflects a shared responsibility between the students, who could opt for less crowded buses at earlier times, and the bus operators, who may need to address safety and scheduling issues.

Nope. Nitte offers buses yes, but some people cannot simply afford the bus fees and I know this because I am an alumni of this college. Also, I heard ever since I graduated instead of installing new buses on various routes, they have made something called as the - standing pass, so if there is no seat in the bus, and you are from nearby vicinities you have to stand and you pay for standing? Like wtf, prefer private buses but they come at their own danger. The local governing authorities need to take some action with respect to safety of not only students but everyone travelling through public transit.

Rest in peace. The owner of the bus, the driver and the conductor has to be booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. They are all responsible for not closing the doors of the bus. Bye the way what happened to the DC's order of installing doors on all buses???
