Paris, Nov 15 (IANS): A French soldier was killed Monday in Afghanistan, bringing to 76 the total number of French troops who have died in the country since 2001, the presidential Elysee Palace said.
The president's office said the soldier was fatally wounded in a fight to defend a convoy against insurgents in Kapisa region of northeastern Afghanistan, Xinhua reported.
Another soldier was injured in the exchange of fire, it said.
France earlier announced a withdrawal of about 4,000 of its soldiers deployed in Afghan territories as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) by 2014.
