Udupi, Aug 24: In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) and several other organisations held a silent march in Udupi on Saturday, August 24, demanding justice for the rape and murder of a medical student in Kolkata. The protest aimed to spotlight the persistent issue of violence against women in India.
Dr P V Bhandary, medical director and psychiatrist, addressed the crowd, calling for more widespread protests. "I am shocked by the recent news from Udupi. Hospitals, which should be places of healing, have become unsafe for women. This is not just a crime; it's a loss of dignity. The law must be enforced rigorously, and perpetrators must face severe consequences," he said.
Dr Bhandary also expressed concern about inadequate legal protection for women and the fear many have of coming forward due to reputational concerns. "We must break stereotypes and ensure timely justice. The courts must handle these situations carefully and deliver strong sentences for such crimes," he added.
Social worker and lecturer Sharada delivered a powerful message, stating, "As women, we are often seen as weak, but this is not true. Whether in the classroom or society, we must assert our equality with men. The recent incident in Kolkata is a grim reminder that our society still harbours deep-rooted biases and that justice remains elusive. It is not our attire that invites violence; it is the mindset of those who commit these acts."
Sharada emphasised that the issue transcends religion, caste, or community and must be addressed at all levels. "Maternity leave is a woman's right, and our voices must be heard. We are often labeled as 'too straightforward,' but it is this honesty that is needed to confront these issues head-on," she said.
Sundar Master, head of the Dalit community, echoed these sentiments, criticizing the government's inaction. "Dr B R Ambedkar gave us a Constitution that provided many opportunities for women, but even after 75 years of Independence, women, Dalits, and minorities are still suppressed. The government's 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' slogan rings hollow when we see women facing injustice every day," he stated.
Sundar Master further criticised the lack of action in Udupi district, including a recent incident in Karkala. "All political parties are equally responsible for turning a blind eye to these issues," he added.
The protest saw participation from various groups, including the Student Islamic Organization (SIO), Girls Islamic Organization (GIO), Justice and Peace Commission, Catholic Sabha, Catholic Women's Organisation, Tulu Nadu Rakshana Vedike, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Dhanvantari College & School of Nursing, and Nagarika Kriya Samiti Santekatte.
The march began in front of Mount Rosary Church, proceeded towards Santekatte, and returned to the Union Bank opposite the church complex.
The event was attended by Dr P V Bhandary, Sharada, Sundar Master, various religious leaders, and social workers. Shiek Ayan welcomed the gathering. Godwin Mascarenhas proposed the vote of thanks, and Alwyn Danthy compered the programme.
