Kundapur, Aug 27: The BJP emerged victorious in the town panchayat elections of Saligrama, with Sukanya Shetty and Girija Poojary elected as the president and vice president, respectively.
As per the state government notification, the president's position was reserved for the general women's category, while the vice president's position was reserved for women from backward castes. The elections took place on August 27.
The election process was conducted at the panchayat office on Tuesday. Nominations were submitted between 9 am and 11 am, and the withdrawal of nominations was allowed from 1:10 pm to 1:30 pm. The Saligrama Town Panchayat has a total of 16 members: the BJP holds 10 seats, Congress holds five, and one seat is held by an independent candidate. Kundapur MLA Kiran Kumar Kodgi, who is permitted to vote in panchayat elections, cast his vote. However, independent candidate Ratna Nagaraja Ganiga abstained from voting.
Following the elections, Sukanya Shetty and Girija Poojary assumed their roles as president and vice president of the Saligrama town panchayat.
