Mumbai, Sep 1: Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof P L Dharma shared that it was the guidance and support of his teachers that enabled a daily wage worker's son from a coffee plantation to become the vice-chancellor of Mangalore University.

Speaking at a felicitation ceremony held on Sunday at a private hotel in the city for the vice-chancellor and his teachers, Prof P L Dharma expressed, "The education and guidance provided by my teachers during my childhood illuminated the path of my life."

Prof P L Dharma revealed that his name was originally Chandra. When he was in the fourth grade in Margoli, there were four students named Chandra in his class. Observing that this Chandra scored higher marks than the others, his teacher, Krishna Bhat, suggested to Chandra's mother that his name be changed to ensure that his marks were uniquely recognized and not confused with the others. Agreeing to this suggestion, Chandra's mother went to Dharmasthala and changed his name from Chandra to Dharma, a name that became permanent thereafter.

During the event, Krishna Bhat and his wife, who were Prof P L Dharma's teachers in primary school, and Elvira Philomena, his lecturer in pre-university, were also honored alongside the vice-chancellor. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr Shivakumar Magada, a professor at the Fisheries University, retired professor Shivaprakash, and K K Pejawar, who shared their thoughts.

Parents of students who excelled in PU and competitive exams were also honored during the program. The prayer was led by Prapthi Purushothama, while the principal of Kittel PU College, Vithal A, compered the event.
