Udupi: MLA Yashpal Suvarna calls for immediate district progress review meeting

Media Release

Udupi, Sep 2: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has called for an urgent district progress review meeting to address the district's pressing issues, including the significant damage caused by recent rains.

Udupi District, which has only seen one district progress review meeting in the last 15 months, is grappling with numerous challenges. Among the most urgent are the extensive damages caused by heavy rains. In response, MLA Yashpal Suvarna has requested the chief minister to instruct the district in-charge minister to convene an immediate meeting to assess the situation and develop strategies for effective solutions.

"The last review meeting, held in November 2023 under the leadership of the district in-charge minister, led to several decisions that remain unimplemented. This year alone, the district has experienced a reported loss of approximately Rs 235 crore due to widespread wind and rain damage. Despite this, the state government has not allocated any relief funds. Many residents have lost their homes and properties, yet no substantial measures have been taken by the government to alleviate their suffering," Suvarna said.

"Daily reports highlight a range of unresolved issues, including coastal erosion, damaged roads and footbridges, problems with ration cards, concerns at the district hospital, inadequacies in public bus services, and shortcomings in the fire brigade. Despite these persistent issues, the state government has failed to take any action, leaving Udupi district neglected and depriving local legislators of the opportunity to bring these matters to the government's attention," he alleged.

While the state government promptly approved Rs 100 crore in aid for the Wayanad disaster, it appears to have overlooked the natural disaster victims of Udupi, he alleged adding that the promised Rs 10 crore for the Udupi Paryaya festival and Rs 5 crore for coastal erosion prevention have not been delivered.

MLA Yashpal Suvarna has stressed the need for an immediate district progress review meeting to tackle these issues head-on and push the administration to take effective steps in resolving the district's challenges.
