Mangaluru, Sep 5: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) held the Internal Hackathon on September 5, as part of the Smart India Hackathon 2024. The event, organized by the SJEC AICTE IDEA Lab in collaboration with The Sceptix Club, brought together over 60 student teams to present innovative solutions to real-world challenges posed by industries, ministries, and government agencies.
The Hackathon featured a diverse range of participants, including students from engineering, MBA, and MCA programmes, who worked on problems in various sectors such as agriculture, food tech, rural development, clean & green technology, heritage & culture, blockchain & cybersecurity, robotics & drones, renewable energy, healthtech, and smart education. The solutions were geared toward fostering skill development, entrepreneurship, and innovation, aligning with the goals of the Smart India Hackathon.
The presentation involved a detailed exploration of each problem statement, followed by an in-depth discussion of the proposed solutions, showcasing technical expertise and underlying technology. The feasibility, viability, and potential impacts of the solutions were critically analyzed, alongside market analysis and competitiveness.
Customer feedback was also presented to highlight the relevance of the solutions, with evaluations conducted by four distinguished judging panels for a rigorous assessment. The esteemed panel comprised Dr Purushotham Chippar, vice principal; Dr Binu K G, professor; Dr Rolvin D’Silva, associate professor; Prashanth, assistant professor; Dr Vijay V S, assistant professor and Rajesh Belchada, assistant professor, all from the department of mechanical engineering.
Additionally, Dr Venkatesh Babu, assistant professor from the department of mathematics, Davor, assistant professor from the department of ICBS and Nitheesh, assistant professor from the department of MCA, contributed their expertise to the evaluation process.
Before the main event, the SJEC IDEA Lab hosted an Ideation Camp on August 28. Led by Glenson Toney, the camp provided participants with an in-depth introduction to the ideation principles. The focus areas included identifying relevant problem statements from the Smart India Hackathon (SIH), setting clear objectives, defining suitable methodologies, selecting appropriate technology stacks, and evaluating feasibility and viability. The camp also highlighted the use of ideation frameworks such as SCAMPER and Starbursting, aimed at guiding the creative process and fostering the development of innovative solutions.
The event was coordinated by Glenson Toney, assistant professor from the department of ECE, Yathish Kumar, assistant professor from the department of mechanical engineering, and Vyasa, founder of The Sceptix Club. The internal hackathon saw active engagement and served as an essential platform for SJEC students to showcase their creative problem-solving skills and technical expertise, as well as to contribute to the larger mission of the Smart India Hackathon. Through such events, the SJEC continues to nurture the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, equipping them with skills and opportunities to address critical challenges in various sectors and contribute to the nation’s growth.
