Udupi, Sep 11: Dr Vidya Kumari, deputy commissioner of Udupi, has announced a large-scale ‘Human Chain’ programme to mark 'International Day of Democracy' on September 15.
The initiative will span approximately 107 kilometers from Byndoor Shiroor toll gate to Kaup Hejamadi toll gate, with over 1 lac participants expected, including district and taluk-level officers, leaders, educational staff, students, and members of various organisations.
Addressing media persons, Dr Vidya Kumari outlined the extensive preparations, noting that committees have been formed at both district and taluk-levels to manage the event. Participants will include members of Rotary, Lions, Red Cross, and cooperative societies, along with local cultural troupes and educational institutions. The programme will feature a 500-metre long flag of India and Karnataka, and will be captured by drone footage in key areas like Maravanthe, Kundapur, and Kinnimulki.
"The human chain will cover about 107 km from Byndoor Shiroor toll gate to Kaup Hejamadi toll gate in Udupi district as directed by the state government," she said.
"Various district level officers, taluk level officers, leaders, members of various organizations, teaching and non-teaching staff of schools and colleges, students, and office bearers of cooperative self-help societies will participate," she said.
The event will begin at 9:30 am, with a simultaneous inauguration by chief minister Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru. Following the human chain, a sapling planting programme will take place on the national highway. Cultural performances, including Yakshagana and costumes representing historical leaders like Ambedkar, Buddha, and Basava, will also be featured.
Dr Vidya Kumari emphasised that, "Posters and placards spreading the values of democracy will be displayed. The district-level programme is being organised near Kinnimulki Swagat Gopura. A 500-metre long and 3-metre wide flag of India and Karnataka will be displayed during the event."
To ensure smooth execution, arrangements have been made for ambulances, drinking water, and sanitation services, with specific officers assigned to manage every segment of the chain. The event will conclude with the state anthem and national anthem, and registered participants will receive certificates.
Dr Vidya Kumari also announced the “Swachatha E Seva” campaign, running from September 14 to October 1, highlighting the need for behavioural changes in sanitation practices. Additionally, she addressed infrastructure repair needs, stating that a special fund of Rs 235 crore is required for repairs to roads, bridges, and other facilities.
The human chain programme aims to be a major demonstration of democratic values and is expected to see significant public participation.
