Lucknow, Nov 22 (IANS): Women rights activist Sampat Pal, who is a Congress candidate for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, has been arrested with her nine aides for assaulting policemen in Chitrakoot district, an official said Tuesday.

The 48-year-old founder head of Gulabi Gang that takes up the cause of women facing violence in Bundelkhand Monday attacked policemen along with her accomplices in Mau area while protesting the arrest of nine people allegedly involved in illegal sand mining.

"Pal and her women supporters indulged in heavy brick-batting that left at least six policemen injured. She also misbehaved with sub-divisional magistrate Abhai Raj," police inspector Satyaveer Singh told reporters in Chitrakoot, 275 km from here.

"While we arrested Pal and her nine aides for rioting, violence and disrupting government work, a case against 20 unidentified people involved in the protests was also registered. Efforts are on to ascertain their identity and arrest them," he added.
