Udupi: Lombard College of Nursing organizes various competitions on occasion of World Heart Day

Udupi, Sep 30: Lombard College of Nursing, a unit of Lombard Group of Institutions organized quiz competition and model exhibition based on theme 'Use Heart for Action' for the students of all the nursing colleges of Udupi on September 30.

In his inaugural message to the young students Dr Sushil Jathanna said, "Heart is the engine of the body. It beats and pumps around 2,000 gallons of blood every day. It is central to our life. Mortality rate among Indians is around 272, but globally the average is around 238. Indians have higher risks of heart disease. Those who have moved to other countries with Indian origin are also not out of these risks. In recent times there is a drastic increase in sudden heart attack, it is very noted that even the youths are also not out of these risks after covid. A drastic increase is seen below the age group of 30. Heart disease has become a biggest killer. Every 33 seconds, a person dies in this world due to the heart related diseases."

The event was inaugurated by Dr Sushil Jathanna, director Lombard memorial hospital along with dignitaries.

"Today with the advancements in diagnosis and intervention techniques, a change has been seen in the medical phenomena. Diabetes, hypertension and hyper cholesterol are few of the root causes for heart diseases. Lifestyle habits like smoking, fast food consumption, lack of physical exercises are also considerable factors. Youths should practice to take up physical exercise at least for 30 minutes every day and stay away from tasty fast foods. Smoking is considered to be a poison to the heart. Balancing stress and maintaining healthy work - life balance is also considerably important. It is better to prevent than to suffer and die of heart disease. Very soon Lombard Memorial hospital will also launch a mobile unit with a view to hold outdoor community check-ups. Our main goal will be to identify diseases like diabetes, heart attack at the early stage among the community," he added.

Models were evaluated by Dr Anant Shenoy, Dr Dhananjay Bhat and Dr Roshan.

Lanet Smitha Karkada, professor Medical Surgical Nursing, welcomed the gathering. Dr Suja Karkada, principal college of nursing emphasized the significance of the day. Rahel Soans proposed a vote of thanks. Priya Josna Fernandes, compered the programme.

Dr Narayana Peralaya, head of laboratory vice principal, Lombard Memorial Paramedical College, and Madhusudhan Heroor of Suvarna Enterprises were present on the occasion.

The entire programme was planned and implemented by faculty of college of nursing, led by Lanet Smitha Karkada, professor college of nursing and Celastine Susan, associate professor.
