Mumbai, Nov 28 (IANS): A benchmark index for Indian equities rose sharply in afternoon trade Monday, ruling over 422 points, as buying picked up in stocks which were battered in recent weeks. Positive cues from Asia and Europe also helped sentiments.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 15,890.8 points, was around 2.27 p.m. ruling at 16,118.15 points -- 422.72 points or 2.69 percent up from its previous close at 15,695.43 points.
The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also trading higher at 4,838.95 points, up 2.74 percent or 128.9 points from its previous close.
Broader markets also rose with the BSE 500 index up 2.3 percent. The BSE midcap index was trading 1.4 percent higher, while the BSE smallcap index was up 1.45 percent.
All 13 sectoral indices on the BSE were in the green with metals, banking and energy stocks were among the gainers.
