Udupi, Oct 6: Incessant downpours lashed the foothills of the Western Ghats, particularly in the Agumbe Ghat and Hebri regions. The sudden torrential rain caused rivers and streams in Udupi district, especially around Hebri, to overflow, leading to flash floods that surged into nearby plantations and paddy fields.
In one alarming incident, a car parked in a low-lying area in Mudradi was swept away by floodwaters from a nearby rubber and areca nut plantation. The torrential rain also affected the Kabbinahole hills, where the heavy rain lasted from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm, resulting in localized flooding.
The Balladi-Tundugudde road connecting Mudradi was temporarily submerged, halting traffic. Water also entered four houses in Kantara Bailu, one house in Hosakambla, and three homes in Kelakila. Meanwhile, lightning strikes accompanied by thunder damaged two cars and a bike.
Although the rain has now subsided and water levels in the rivers and streams are receding, the district remains on alert.
