Ishrat Jahan Encounter: Gujarat HC Orders CBI Probe

Ahmedabad, Dec 1: The Central Bureau of Investigation will now probe the sensational Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

The Gujarat high court on Thursday December 1 passed on the investigation to the CBI. The court also stated that the decision was taken as the state police could not be trusted.

Ishrat, Javed Sheikh, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were killed in a shootout by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch on June 15, 2004.

Earlier, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had found that Ishrat and three others were killed in a fake encounter, after which the HC ordered a fresh FIR against the accused police personnel.

Ordering CBI inquiry, the court said that the case was exceptional, and ordered thr SIT to file a fresh FIR to enable CBI to begin the probe.

Ishrat Jahan's family had also urged a CBI probe into the case.
