Mangaluru, Oct 17: The VTU Mangaluru Division Men's Basketball Tournament 2024-25 was organised on October 15 by the Department of Physical Education of St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor.
The tournament was inaugurated at the College Basketball Court at 10:00 am. The chiehf guest, Dr Rio D’Souza, principal of SJEC, in his address, emphasised sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play as crucial aspects of the upcoming VTU Mangaluru Division Basketball Tournament. He encouraged participation from all teams and highlighted the importance of discipline, dedication, and representing the institution with pride and integrity throughout the competition.
Fr Wilfred Prakash, director of SJEC, and Dr Purushotham Chippar, vice-principal of SJEC, were the guests of onour. Florence Nishmitha, chairperson of the Wellness and Sports Group, welcomed the gathering, while Chitharanjan M, the sports advisor, delivered the vote of thanks.
Vaneesha V Rodrigues, the Physical Education Director, introduced the team members to the principal and director. Priya S Miranda, sports advisor, was also present in the event. Director honoured all the team managers. Further, the dignitaries inaugurated the tournament by shooting the basketball into the basket.
Eight teams had participated in the tournament. Teams were from SJEC Vamanjoor, SCEM Adyar, PACE, Mangaluru, Alva’s, Moodbidri, BIT, Mangaluru, CEC, Mangaluru, MITE Moodbidri and NMAMIT, Nitte.
NMAMIT, Nitte emerged as the winners of the tournament while SJEC Vamanjoor bagged the runners up trophy. Shujan S Shetty of NMAMIT, Nitte was awarded best shooter and Alden Alvares – SJEC, Vamanjoor was awarded best defender of VTU Mangaluru Division Basketball Tournament 2024.
The valedictory ceremony was held on October 15 at 9.45 pm at the Mangala Indoor Stadium, Mangaluru. Dr Kishore Kumar C K, director of physical education and former Registrar of Mangalore University was the chief guest for the same.
Priya Miranda, sports advisor, Aditya Mahale, Basketball coach and Vaneesha Rodrigues, PED were present during the valedictory function. Dr Kishore Kumar C K congratulated the winners and the organisers. Prizes to winners were distributed during this ceremony.
The tournament was well-received by all participants, officials, and team managers. Everyone expressed their appreciation for the excellent organisation and the facilities provided during their stay on campus.
