Mangaluru, Oct 25: In a heartwarming medical milestone, a nine-year-old boy suffering from chronic kidney disease has been given a new lease on life, thanks to a successful kidney transplant performed at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte, Mangaluru. The kidney, generously donated by his grandmother, marks a story of love, family, and medical excellence.
The intricate procedure was led by a distinguished team from the Yenepoya Institute of nephro-Urology. The urology team included Dr Mujeeburahiman M (HOD), Dr Altaf Khan, Dr Nischith D’Souza, and Dr Sharath D V, with vascular surgeon Dr Ganesh Kamath. While the nephrology team comprised Dr Santhosh Pa (HOD), Dr Haisam, Dr Aditya, and Dr Preema. pediatricians Dr Sahana and Dr Arun Varghese helped the team with their expertise in pediatric care. The skilled anesthesiology professionals, Dr Thippeswamy and Dr Mithalee ensured smooth progress during the surgery.
Chronic kidney disease, a severe condition impacting the young boy's daily life, required regular interventions and posed numerous challenges to his development and well-being. The transplant was seen as essential for providing him with a more normal lifestyle, free from the limitations imposed by his condition.
Discussion and planning for the transplant involved understanding both medical and familial aspects, ultimately leading to the selfless decision by the boy’s grandmother to donate her kidney. Her act of love provided a compatible match, allowing for the procedure to proceed confidently.

After several hours, the operation concluded successfully, with the young patient beginning his recovery phase. Post-surgery, the medical team expressed optimism about the boy’s prognosis and emphasized the critical importance of organ donation in saving lives.
