Udupi, Oct 25: Lombard Hospital in collaboration with Udupi Runners Club (R), to host 'Lombard Hospital Udupi Marathon 2024' in Udupi on December 1, as part of the hospital’s 101st anniversary celebration.
Dr Sushil Jathanna, director Lombard Memorial Hospital, addressing the media in the press meet held on October 25 said, “Along with treatment we also focus on prevention. Exercise has many benefits. Heart disease is increasing mainly because of today's lifestyle. Our theme is to improve physical and mental health through this marathon. The event, starting from Malpe Sea Walk, aims to cater to runners of all levels, promoting health, wellness, and community spirit.”
Divakar Ganapathi Nayak, secretary of Udupi runners club, expressed gratitude for the immediate approval of the marathon request by Dr Jathanna. He noted, “The marathon’s location has been strategically chosen to boost tourism while ensuring a pollution-free environment. A fun run has also been organized to encourage wider community participation.”
The marathon is expected to attract over 1,500 participants from across the country. The race will commence at 5 am from Malpe Sea Walk, proceed through Padukere, Udyavar, and Mattu, and conclude back at the Sea Walk.
The 'Promo Run' will be held on November 24, as part of World Diabetes Day, starting from Lombard Hospital's mission compound and covering a route around Udupi town. All are welcome to join and participate in this pre-event run.
Race categories:
The marathon will include the following race categories for both men and women:
21 km, 10 km, and 5 km races, divided into three age groups: 18-35 years, 36-50 years, and 51 years & above.
Separate competitions for students under 18 years (5 km) and under 14 years (3 km).
A 3 km fun run, open to participants of all ages to encourage community involvement in fitness.
The top five position winners in the student’s category will be awarded with cash prizes and in other categories top three finishers will receive cash prizes. The school with the highest participation and the highest points will be awarded the team championship. The participants will be given a running T-shirt, participation certificate, finisher medal and breakfast.
Registrations are now open, with the deadline for entries set for November 21.
