Mangalore, Dec 6: Relating to the recovery of the lifeless body of Mohammed (50) near Mariamma Temple in Urva in the city on Monday December 5 morning, the policemen have found out that he was a native of Hejamady in Udupi district.
The wife and children of the deceased arrived in the city on Monday and confirmed Mohammed’s identity. He used to work as driver. It is said that he had been fully drunk when he slept in the compound adjacent to the temple, and someone dropped a stone on his head when he was fast asleep.
Mohammed used to work for a soft drinks unit near Mariamma Temple since about a month. Reportedly, he had collected his salary from the owner of the soft drinks unit on Sunday morning. His head was crushed with stone by unknown persons on the night of Sunday December 4.
Mohammed had not visited his family since the last six years. After deserting his wife and children, he had severed all contacts with his relatives. The policemen said he was a drunkard, and a habitual gambler. Hence, there is every possibility that dispute relating to gambling activity would have cost Mohammed his life.
Investigation is on.
