Mangaluru, Oct 29: The centre for social concern (CSC) at St Aloysius PU College is a dedicated initiative focused on cultivating social responsibility, empathy, and community engagement among students.

The centre successfully conducted "Seva Sapthami"— a week-long event focused on community service and acts of kindness — from October 21 to 27. This initiative aimed to foster social duty, compassion, and selflessness among students, inviting individuals from all walks of life to contribute to the community’s well-being.

"Seva Sapthami" commenced with an inaugural ceremony graced by the principal, Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, along with the vice-principal, Muralikrishna GM, and dean, Kiran Shetty.

During the inauguration, the principal commended the members of CSC for their dedication to making a positive impact, underscoring the joy that lies in helping others and making small, meaningful changes in the lives of many. CSC president Venus Luis outlined the week’s activities. On Day 1, CSC members expressed gratitude to the college’s maintenance staff, acknowledging their invaluable role in the campus community.

Day 2 focused on a campus-wide cleanliness drive, engaging volunteers to enhance the cleanliness and health of the campus environment.

On day 3, CSC volunteers distributed food and beverages to those in need at several locations, a heartfelt gesture in line with CSC’s ongoing commitment to community service.

An essay writing competition on day 4 encouraged students to creatively and critically address topics on the environment, society, and personal growth in Hindi, Kannada, and English.

On Day 5, a thought-provoking discussion titled “The Role of Youth in Social Change” featured insights from Anson Nazareth on the importance of youth involvement in education and environmental preservation. The interactive session inspired students to contribute actively to societal improvement.

A powerful drama highlighted issues of discrimination and violence against women and girls on Day 6. The drama presented a sobering reminder of the injustices faced by women, aiming to raise awareness of these serious social issues and challenge society’s tolerance of such wrongs.

To conclude "Seva Sapthami", CSC organised a visit to Snehalaya, a rehabilitation centre, on Day 7, where students engaged with residents. The visit fostered empathy and social responsibility, with students learning from the dedicated efforts of Snehalaya staff and volunteers in providing holistic care and support.

"Seva Sapthami" exemplified the values of empathy, compassion, and service. Through teamwork and dedication, CSC students and participants demonstrated their commitment to social change, reaffirming the college’s mission to build a compassionate, kind, and caring society.
