Mangaluru, Nov 13: Despite a recent lull in the northeast monsoon, the coastal region has already surpassed its expected rainfall target for the season, achieving it within just one month.

Typically, the coastal region receives an average rainfall of 259.4 mm during the northeast monsoon period, which spans from October 1 to the end of December. However, as of now, the area has recorded 308.9 mm of rainfall, an increase of 41% compared to the average.

Rainfall comparisons across various coastal areas since October 1 indicate a significant variation: Beltangady (23%), Bantwal (6%), Mangaluru (35%), Puttur (16%), Sullia (30%), Moodbidri (23%), and Kadaba (33%) have all recorded above-average rainfall. Conversely, Mulki (-37%), Ullal (-23%), Brahmavar (-8%), and Kaup (-41%) have experienced a deficit. The southwest monsoon earlier this year was also robust, with a 20% increase over the average rainfall. As the northeast monsoon began in October, it brought consistent and substantial rain across the coastal region.

During the northeast monsoon period, the coastal region has seen varying trends in rainfall over the years. In 2016, the rainfall was significantly below average, with a deficit of 57%. The following years also experienced shortages, with deficits of 25% in 2017 and 28% in 2018. However, 2019 marked a sharp increase, recording 124% above the average rainfall. This trend continued with 27% above average in 2020 and 122% in 2021. The year 2022, however, saw another dip with a 14% deficit. In 2023, the rainfall was slightly above average, at 6%. As of November 12, 2024, the region has recorded a substantial increase of 41% in rainfall, indicating a robust northeast monsoon season this year.
