Hebri: Our focus is on surrender, not encounter - DGP ISD Pranab Mohanty

Hebri, Nov 20: DGP for Internal Security Pranab Mohanty visited Hebri on Wednesday evening following the encounter of Naxal leader Vikram Gowda. Addressing the media, he provided details about the operation, which took place around 6 pm on Monday, November 18, in a remote forested area.

DGP Mohanty clarified that the encounter was not pre-planned but occurred when police teams came face-to-face with Gowda during combing operations. “The police recovered a machine gun capable of firing 50-60 rounds with a single trigger pull, a 0.3 mm pistol, and a knife from Gowda. There were no indications of surrender from him, nor had there been any prior correspondence suggesting such intentions,” he stated.

Refuting allegations of the encounter being staged, Mohanty assured that it was a legitimate operation supported by evidence, including recent photographs of Gowda that are in the possession of the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF).

Vikram Gowda, a key figure in the Naxal movement, had several cases registered against him. His movements were last tracked in April in Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts. However, no significant updates on his activities emerged until this incident. “Combing operations are underway across Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, and neighboring districts to ensure public safety and curb Naxal activities,” Mohanty said.

He emphasized that the primary focus of the police is to encourage Naxal operatives to surrender. “Multiple surrender and rehabilitation packages are available for those willing to renounce violence. Our objective is to protect the public and maintain peace. Citizens need not fear Naxal activities,” he reassured.

Udupi police superintendent Dr Arun K and ANF officials were present during the press meet.

Surrendering can save lives and help capture the entire Naxal network successfully. Ultimately, encountering such militant Naxalites will be appropriate.
