Bangalore, Dec 13: All opposition members in the Karnataka Assembly demanded the immediate transfer of Bhadravathi tahsildar for allegedly insulting and not allowing Congress member B K Sangameshwar to discharge his functions in the constituency.

Cases had been booked against Sangameshwar a few months ago under different sections of IPC for physical assault and preventing Tahsildar Abhijin from discharging his duty.

The MLA was arrested and later released on conditional bail.

Raising the issue during the zero hour in the Legislative Assembly, Congress Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and Appaji Nadagouda of the Congress demanded the Speaker to take steps to safeguard privileges and rights of the member.

They alleged that the member has not been able to discharge his functions in the constituency following non-cooperation by the tahsildar and the sub-inspector and demanded immediate transfer of two officials.

Sangameshwar has threatened to tender resignation to the membership of the House for not taking action against officials of Bhadravathi by the Government.

Congress members urged Speaker K G Bopaiah to direct the Government to take action against erring officials who show disrespect to MLAs, MLCs and MPs.

BJP member K G Kumaraswamy, representing Shimoga rural constituency, strongly defended the tahsildar and said the MLA had abused and assaulted the official twice earlier.

Following divided opinion in the House between ruling and Opposition members, Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said he would not take a decision against the official in a hurry and seek a report from the Regional Commissioner.

The Government’s decision against the official would be announced on Wednesday, the chief minister said.
