Beltangady, Nov 22: A 21-year-old youth, Shahil, son of Mohammed Hayif and a resident of Panakaje, reportedly attempted suicide on Thursday, November 21, after being humiliated by friends over his jeans.
Shahil had worn a trendy pair of jeans with torn designs and visited the Beltangady market. Three of his friends, identified as Shabbir from Puthrabailu, Aneesh from Panakaje, and Saleem from Adarsha Nagara, allegedly tied his hands behind his back and stitched the torn parts of his jeans using a large needle typically used for stitching gunny bags.
The group recorded the incident, made the video viral on social media, and even sent it directly to Shahil. Unable to bear the humiliation, Shahil reportedly consumed a poisonous substance that evening. He was first treated in Beltangady and later shifted to Mangaluru for advanced care. His condition remains critical.
The public has urged the police to take strict action against the accused.
