Mangaluru, Dec 3: The residents of Kettikal near Vamanjoor are in distress due to ongoing road construction. Despite owning their properties, they were instructed by NHAI officials to vacate their homes overnight. The district administration assured them that alternative housing would be provided, along with a rent payment of Rs 20,000 from the concerned department.
The residents followed the district administration’s instructions and moved into rented accommodations. However, the promised support has not been fulfilled. Only one month's rent was provided, and since then, the district administration and local politicians have not addressed the residents’ concerns.
Unable to meet the rent payments, the residents returned to their homes after a month. The financial burden of staying in rented accommodations made it unsustainable for them.
The situation has worsened with the heavy rainfall in Mangaluru due to Cyclone Fengal. Despite these adverse conditions, NHAI officials visited the area again, demanding that the residents vacate their homes immediately—without providing alternative arrangements.
Frustrated residents have expressed their concerns, as the officials continue to insist on their immediate relocation, even though no proper provisions have been made. Meanwhile, the district administration has not responded to their pleas for assistance.
Resident Mohan said, "We stayed in a rented house for three months, with the concerned department covering the rent for only one month. Since then, they have neither responded nor paid the rent. Due to the financial burden, we had to move back to our original homes. Now, out of the blue, last night, NHAI officials are instructing us to shift immediately, without making any proper arrangements. The concerned officials have neither provided the promised rent money nor made adequate alternative arrangements."
