Paravoor (Kerala), Dec 18 (PTI): There is no need to worry about the safety of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant as it has been constructed with the "most advanced technology", former president A P J Abdul Kalam said on Saturday. "Even in the event of a tsunami, the KNPP will be able to withstand it and safety measures have been taken to prevent radiation," he said.
The Plant has been constructed with the "most advanced technology", Kalam said, addressing students after inaugurating 'Sasthrayaan', a pioneer project for Quality Science Education, initiated by Congress MLA V D Satheesan.
The former president was replying to a query from a student about the safety of the project, the first unit of which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said on Friday would be functional in a "couple of weeks".
Asked about the tension between Tamil Nadu and Kerala over the Mullaperiyar dam, he said the issue could be settled through discussions between the two chief ministers.
The 'Sasthrayaan' project will cover about 7,000 students and 250 teachers in 21 schools at Paravoor constituency of Ernakulam district.
Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy presided over the function.
