Udupi, Dec 4: The tennis courts of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, MIT, KMC, and Marena, are set to host two prestigious women’s tennis events this December. The South Zone Inter-University tennis tournament for women from December 7 to 10, and the All-India Inter-Zone Inter-University tennis tournament for women from December 13 to 16.
Both tournaments promise exciting competition and showcase exceptional talent as universities from across the region and nation will be participating.
The South Zone tournament will see fierce competition among top universities as they battle for a spot in the All-India tournament.
This elite national-level event will feature the best-performing teams from the zonal tournaments, making it a must-watch for tennis enthusiasts.
Matches will be held at the world-class tennis facilities of MIT, KMC, and Marena, which are well-equipped to host events of this stature. Participants, including players, managers, coaches, and officials, will be accommodated at the MIT and KMC hostels and the MAHE guest house, ensuring a comfortable and convenient stay.
Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor, MAHE Manipal, addressing media in the press conference held on December 4, said, "MAHE has always been at the forefront of promoting sports and nurturing young talent. Hosting these tournaments reflects our commitment to empowering women in sports and fostering a spirit of healthy competition. MAHE has six synthetic tennis courts, two courts each in Marena, KMC and MIIT."
Lieutenant general (Dr) M D Venkatesh, VSM (retired), vice-chancellor, MAHE, said, "MAHE is proud to host these prestigious events that underline our dedication to sports and holistic development. We look forward to witnessing the incredible skill and sportsmanship displayed by athletes from across the country. Tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world. Tennis is the richest sport. Top women tennis players at national level are going to participate in the tournament."

Dr Sharath Rao, pro vice-chancellor (health sciences), MAHE Manipal, said, “These events not only celebrate athletic excellence but also underline the importance of a balanced approach to academics and sports. We are proud to host such prestigious tournaments that inspire young athletes to pursue their dreams. Last year we hosted the South Zone women cricket tournament and this year we are hosting South Zone women tennis tournament and All India level tournament. 16 teams from different parts of the country and 38 teams from the South zone will participate in the tournament”.
