Mangaluru, Dec 14: A joint operation by the police and health department against smoking in public spaces led to 51 cases being registered, with fines imposed on offenders.

The team conducted inspections in areas including Falnir, Attavar, Hampankatta, and the RTO. A fine of ?200 was levied on individuals caught smoking near hotels, cafés, tea stalls, petty shops, and other public places.

As per the COTPA Act, only full cigarette packs are to be sold, and the sale of loose cigarettes is prohibited. Shops and cafés violating this rule by selling one or two cigarettes were also fined. Additionally, petty shops selling cigarettes within a 100-meter radius of schools and colleges faced penalties.

The team issued warnings to offending shops and tea stalls, cautioning them about potential trade license cancellations if violations continue. Smokers were also advised to visit the district Wenlock Hospital for assistance in overcoming their addiction.

The operation was conducted under the direction of district health and family welfare officer Dr. Thimmaiah H R and led by district surveillance officer Dr Navinchandra Kulal, with support from Pundalika Lakate and Shruthi of the District Tobacco Control Cell and the Pandeshwar police.
