Mangaluru, Dec 17: Smart Cities Mission - an innovative programme launched by the government of India in co-ordination with the State Governments, aims to drive the economic growth and improve the quality of life of people by enabling local development and harnessing technology as a means to deliver better service to the citizens.

The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and the idea is to develop compact areas, create a replicable model which will act like a light house to other aspiring cities.

According to Arun Prabha, MD, Mangalore Smart City Project, "Mangaluru has always been the prime Economic and Maritime Hub of Coastal Karnataka, rare in its economic and ecological balance and driven by innovation, entrepreneurship, knowledge and healthcare services to create an equitable city with equally high levels of opportunities, quality of life and urban services.

"Mangaluru Smart City was selected in the 2nd Round in 2016. A total of Seven cities from Karnataka - Bengaluru, Belagavi, Davanagere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Shivamogga and Tumakuru are selected under the Mission and the implementation of projects are in advance stage of implementation," he said. 

Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation Ltd., (KUIDFC) is the State Level Agency for the mission. KUIDFC is a pioneer organisation in designing & implementing externally aided projects, central sponsored schemes and other major urban infrastructure projects.

The major projects developed by Mangaluru Smart City Limited are as follows:

  • Conversion of all lighting in government building into LED benefitted around 27 Government Buildings in ABD area by reduction in power cost by 50%. The total cost of this project is Rs. 1.91 Crore.
  • Supply & Installation of 37 bedded ICU executed within 30 days during first Covid breakout at new super speciality block of first floor at Wenlock hospital premises helped hundreds of Covid-19 patients to be cured and administration ready with requisite infrastructure. The facility has been fully functional during 2nd wave and has contributed to quality healthcare to citizens. The total cost of this project is Rs. 3.42 Crore.
  • Smart Road Packages has transformed the main CBD area including Hampankatta traffic junction, Loop Road, Pumpwell Padil Road and many roads in Mangaluru City has resulted in seamless and hasslefree traffic movement. The total cost of this project is Rs. 261 Crore.
  • Implementation of E-smart schools in all government schools-package 2-ICT helped in providing 35 Smart classes and benefitted more than 1500 students and increased the student intake by 150%. The total cost of this project is Rs. 13.67 Crore.
  • Rejuvenation of Gujjarkere lake for Rainwater harvesting & recreation has helped rejuvenate the lake and provide outdoor activities to nearby citizens. Fish breeding also is being taken up which has led to employment generation. The total cost of this project is Rs. 4.08 Crore.
  • Rejuvenation of Kavoor Lake for Rainwater harvesting & recreation has helped rejuvenate the lake and provide outdoor activities to nearby citizens. More than 100 species of migratory birds visit this lake and has improved the local ecology. The total cost of this project is Rs. 8.39 Crore.
  • Skill Development and Safety Training Centre has benefitted the local youth by providing vocational training in fishing related activities and unemployment in the fisheries community is greatly reduced. The total cost of this project is Rs. 4.52 Crore.
  • Development of Kadri Park Area has resulted in planned parking and movement of people as well as provide business opportunities to the citizens by providing food kiosks as well as provide revenue generation to the City Corporation. Providing Automatic Irrigation system with Planting, granite pergolas and Street light and electrical upgradation work has transformed the Kadri park road into a leisure activity area to provide wholesome refreshing atmosphere to the public. The total cost of this project is Rs. 17.33 Crore.
  • Construction of Pedestrian Plaza has benefitted the people travelling towards the Railway station since they can avoid crossing the busy road and safely cross the main roads in CBD area through underpass as well as provide revenue to the City Corporation by renting out kiosks. The nearby Rajaji park has also been redeveloped which has seen improved footfall post Smart city initiative. An open amphitheatre with 250 seating has encouraged budding artistes to showcase their talent during periodic functions. The total cost of this project is Rs. 7.00 Crore.
  • Mangala Stadium upgradation of 80m portion of spectator gallery has provided gym & other facility to sports persons which can be further replicated. The total cost of this project is Rs. 8.58 Crore.
  • Implementation of Command and Control Center in Mangaluru City has benefitted the citizens by providing One-touch app to avail benefits of District administration and also provided traffic surveillance infrastructure. QR code has been installed in 88,000 households and GPS installed in 114 vehicles to track and monitor the waste collection. Cameras have been installed at junctions to track traffic violations thereby bringing in revenue to Traffic Department. Environmental Sensors have been installed to monitor the pollution levels. The total cost of this project is Rs. 43.13 Crore.
  • Construction of Clock Tower at Clock Tower Junction improved the ambience of the area around the Central Business District. The total cost of this project is Rs. 0.63 Crore.
  • Construction of Smart Bus Shelter and E-Toilets in PAN City –Phase 1 & Phase 2 (20 nos) helped the bus passengers along National Highway by providing all weather protection during waiting for Bus. The total cost of this project is Rs. 3.92 Crore.
  • Underground Drainage network in ABD Area helped improve to UGD network in Central Business District by replacing old dilapidated masonry manholes with new RCC manholes and efficient UPVC sewers. The total cost of this project is Rs. 40.00 Crore.
  • Construction of additional floor at existing building of lady Goschen hospital at Mangaluru has helped by providing Administrative section to the Hospital. The total cost of this project is Rs. 2.16 Crore.
  • Upgradation of Integrated Asset Management and Urban Property Ownership Record Building has benefited since additional office space and planned vehicle parking has been made available. The total cost of this project is Rs. 3.86 Crore.
  • Infra works around Wenlock Hospital has benefitted the people visiting the hospital by providing seamless movement inside the hospital premises. The total cost of this project is Rs. 5.38 Crore.
  • Taking up UG Cabling in Mangaladevi Temple area has resulted in improving the ambience of the area since overhead lines have been removed and current losses have reduced and periodic maintenance is avoided. The total cost of this project is Rs. 3.65 Crore.
  • Retrofit Car Street & surrounding areas has improved the ambience of the place by providing Heritage look. The total cost of this project is Rs. 1.92 Crore.
  • Strengthening distribution system for implementing 24x7 water supply including 8 years 0 & M to Mangaluru City (Contribution from Smart city fund of Rs. 114.00 Crore as Convergence) has facilitated by providing the much required additional funding to the all-important water supply project for the city.
  • Construction of Command Control Building - annexe to MCC Building has provided much required additional office space to Smart City officials as well as City Corporation officials. The total cost of this project is Rs. 6.29 Crore.
  • Construction of New Surgical Block at Wenlock Hospital – Mangaluru Smart City has constructed a super speciality surgical block consisting of 12 Operation Theatres and 250 Beds along with supply of latest surgical equipment at a total cost of Rs. 63 Crores. This block will be providing State of the Art healthcare facilities to the citizens of Mangaluru and the neighbouring districts.
  • Waterfront Development is one of the most important projects of the Mangalore Smart City project. Out of the 3 Waterfront projects taken up by Mangaluru Smart City, Area Development at Tannirbhavi work is completed at a cost of Rs. 7.50 Crores. Construction of Approach Ramp to the Road bridge at Sulthan battery and Tannirbhavi area work at a cost of Rs. 62 Crores has been approved by the CRZ and the work is in progress. Also the Promenade Development project from Netravathi Bridge to Bolara Sea Face is being taken up at a cost of Rs. 33 Crores is in progress.
  • Indoor Stadium at Urva Market consists of 6 Nos shuttle court at the Ground floor level and 5 Nos shuttle court at the Third floor level. In the Ground Floor, The Court is interchangeable to Kabbadi by laying kabbadi Mats, The Three kabbadi courts can be accommodated at the ground Floors. The total cost of this project is Rs. 26.64 Crore.
