43,000 Chinese Officials Probed for Abuse of Power


Beijing, Dec 23 (IANS) Over 43,000 government officials in China have been investigated this year in cases related to abuse of official power, according to latest figures.

Chinese prosecutors from January to November launched investigations into a total of 31,616 criminal cases involving 43,265 such suspects, Xinhua reported citing the figures provided at a national meeting of procurators.

Prosecutors across China approved the arrests of a total of 837,736 suspects and prosecuted nearly 1.07 million people.

Among them were 1,801 people involved in the manufacture and sale of poisonous or harmful food products.

At least 120 government employees have been investigated for food-related graft and dereliction of duty this year.
