Mangaluru: St Anthony’s Charity Institute, Jeppu spreads Christmas spirit with joyful celebration

Mangaluru, Dec 22: St Anthony’s Charity Institute came alive with the festive spirit as residents, priests, and well-wishers gathered to celebrate the birth of Christ on Sunday, December 22.

The event was presided over by Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangaluru. Chief guests Ivan D’Souza, MLC of Karnataka, and Vedavyasa Kamath, MLA of Mangaluru South constituency, graced the occasion with their presence. Guests of honor included Jacintha Vijay Alfred, corporator of Falnir ward, and Bharath Kumar S, corporator of Jeppu ward.

In his presidential address, the bishop lauded the institute’s century-long dedication to serving society. “The ashram has been a beacon of light and hope, sheltering the needy, orphaned, and helpless. It is a place where God’s grace and presence are reflected in the residents. What you do unto these is done unto God,” he said, emphasizing the institute’s mission to uphold dignity and love for humanity.

Ivan D’Souza highlighted the true essence of Christmas, urging everyone to share love and live in solidarity. “This ashram and its residents are the best examples of love manifested in each other’s care, despite their weaknesses and frailties,” he said.

Vedavyasa Kamath commended the institute for honoring service providers during the celebration. “Recognizing the services of people around us and honoring them with respect and dignity is the best way to celebrate Christmas,” he noted.

The event included the distribution of Christmas gifts to the residents, a gesture symbolizing the joy of giving. Carol singing accompanied by a lively brass band enthralled the audience. The screening of the Konkani movie Christachem Janan (The Birth of Christ) added to the festive spirit.

Fr JB Crasta, director of the institute, warmly welcomed the gathering. The program was compered by Aloysius D’Souza, while Fr Avinash Pais delivered the vote of thanks. Fr Gilbert D’Souza, chaplain, Fr Avinash Pais, assistant director, and Fr Nelson Peris, assistant director, were among the dignitaries on the dais. Fr Anil Ivan Fernandes, director of Canara Communication Centre, Roy Castelino, PRO, and Marcel Monteiro were also present.

The celebration served as a testament to the ashram’s unwavering commitment to uplifting the marginalized. As the bishop aptly concluded, “Bringing joy and happiness and sharing love with our little brethren has been the pulse of everyone who visits this ashram.”

The event left the attendees inspired, embodying the true meaning of Christmas – love, joy, and togetherness.
