Kundapur, Dec 25:  Villagers intercepted a vehicle in which cattle were being transported for being butchered, in the wee hours on Saturday December 24, and rescued 21 cattle. The incident occurred at Hoovinakere village near Vakwady in the taluk.

Cattle which had been left to graze by the villagers, had often been going missing since some days. The villagers, growing angry at this development, were determined to catch hold of the thieves.  Hundreds of villagers, under the banner of Charokottige Friends in Korgi, Moorukai Friends, Hoovinakere Friends, and Bajrang Dal Koteshwar unit, began patrolling the area since Friday evening. 

At around 1 am on Saturday, they found a vehicle that was being driven towards Hoovinakere from Charukottige at high speed, and stopped it. Growing fearful of the huge crowd, those in the vehicle ran away from the scene. The activists found 21 cattle, which were heaped together by binding their legs together in an inhuman fashion. Out of them, six were found to be fighting to survive.

The cattle which were in serious condition were taken to the cow shelter at Hoovinakere, where they were treated. The other cattle and vehicle were handed over to the policemen here. The policemen have registered a case, and are on the lookout for the culprits.
