New Delhi, Jan 8: Rescue operations in Assam’s Dima Hasao district are ongoing following a tragic incident where nine workers became trapped in a coal mine after a sudden gush of water flooded the site. On the third day of operations, army divers successfully recovered one body from the flooded coal mine located in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso.

The identity of the deceased has yet to be confirmed. Despite the recovery, hope for the survival of the remaining eight workers is diminishing as challenging conditions persist at the site.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to express condolences, stating, “21 Para divers have just recovered a lifeless body from the bottom of the well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family.” He assured the public that rescue efforts were being carried out with full force, involving personnel from the army, navy, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

The chief minister also mentioned that the coal mine appeared to be illegal, and police have taken action by arresting one individual related to the incident. Meanwhile, navy personnel are preparing for further diving operations to assist in the search for the trapped workers.

Rescue teams remain determined despite the challenging and hazardous conditions, with a focus on safely recovering all trapped workers.
