Imphal, Jan 8: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has issued a strong warning against those spreading rumors on social media with the intent to stir communal tensions in the state. Speaking at an event where benefits were distributed to labor cardholders, Singh expressed concern over the rise in false information aimed at creating discord between communities.
The Chief Minister highlighted that some individuals, motivated by vested interests, were actively using social media to fuel enmity between communities. "I have received reports about people spreading rumors to create division. I have directed relevant departments to identify and take strong action against these culprits," Singh stated, reiterating his commitment to preserving peace and communal harmony in Manipur. He stressed that the government would take strict measures against anyone found guilty of spreading malicious rumors that disrupt the peace.
At the event, the Chief Minister distributed Rs 2.89 crore in Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) to approximately 5,225 beneficiaries, including displaced families residing in relief camps. As part of the special scheme, each valid labor cardholder's family affected by the violence received Rs 5,000 in aid. Singh also emphasized the importance of collective efforts during this difficult time in the state and called on people to refrain from engaging in petty politics. “Politicians must work for the betterment of the land and its people, standing firm for the welfare of the state,” he said.
The Chief Minister further outlined several welfare programs introduced by the BJP-led government to support the people of Manipur, including cashless medical treatment through the chief minister-gi Hakshelgi Tengbang (CMHT) scheme, assistance for differently-abled individuals through the Chief Minister Sotharabasin-gi Tengbang initiative, and free education for children of labor cardholders in relief camps under the School Fagathansi Mission. He also mentioned the chief minister gi Artistes singi Tengbang (CMAT) scheme, which provides monthly pensions to around 900 artists, and the One Family, One Livelihood Scheme, which has supported thousands of families.
To enhance employment, Singh announced a new training program for 500 youths in Delhi for cabin crew placements, funded by the Ministry of Tourism, with priority given to displaced persons. Additionally, 17 startups have already created job opportunities for around 432 displaced individuals.
In response to the ongoing ethnic conflict, Singh stated that the government has provided assistance in relocating affected families to safer areas.
In Phubala, around 2,500 prefabricated houses have been constructed and occupied, offering secure housing for displaced individuals. The chief minister reaffirmed his government’s dedication to offering all possible assistance to those impacted by the violence, highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure their safety and well-being.
