Jammu, Jan 9: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has voiced strong criticism of the escalating tension between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. He suggested that the INDIA alliance, formed as a united opposition bloc, should be disbanded if it lacks the cohesion needed to challenge the ruling BJP effectively.
Omar’s comments followed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav’s recent assertion that the INDIA alliance has lost its purpose, which he claimed was limited to the Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking to reporters, Omar expressed disappointment over the lack of unity between AAP and Congress, both members of the INDIA alliance, as they continue to engage in bitter electoral campaigns against each other in Delhi. "If this alliance was only for the Lok Sabha elections, then it should be wound up," Omar remarked.
He further criticized the absence of a clear strategy and leadership within the bloc, stating, "It is unfortunate that no meeting has been held to chart out the alliance's future. Key questions remain unanswered: Who will lead? What is the agenda? How will we move forward? Without clarity, unity is impossible."
Omar also called for a meeting of the INDIA bloc after the Delhi elections to determine its future course. "If the alliance is to continue for assembly elections, then we must genuinely work together," he added.
Despite the ongoing AAP-Congress rivalry, Omar clarified that his National Conference (NC) has no involvement in the Delhi elections. However, he underscored the importance of AAP and Congress coordinating their efforts if they intend to challenge the BJP effectively.
Omar’s relationship with the Congress has been complex. While Congress supports the NC-led government in Jammu and Kashmir, Omar has not hesitated to critique the party. In December, he urged Congress to justify its leadership within the INDIA alliance rather than assuming it. Recognizing Congress as the largest opposition party in Parliament, Omar stressed that leadership "must be earned" and called for the party to address critical issues like the restoration of J&K’s statehood.
Reflecting on the NC’s alliance with Congress during the J&K Assembly elections, Omar admitted the decision was difficult, requiring NC to forgo potential wins in several constituencies. He also dismissed Congress’ complaints about Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), asserting, "You can't accept results when you win and blame EVMs when you lose."
Omar’s pointed remarks underline the growing challenges facing the INDIA alliance as it struggles to present a united front amid internal conflicts and leadership disputes.
