New Delhi, Jan 10: The Supreme Court of India on Friday restrained Hindus from performing puja at a well located near the disputed Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. A bench consisting of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar stayed the implementation of a notice issued by municipal authorities in Sambhal concerning the well.
This decision follows a plea filed by the Committee of Management of Shahi Jama Masjid, challenging a civil court’s order for a survey of the mosque.
During the proceedings, the Muslim side argued that the well, which has been used for drawing water for generations, should not be disturbed by new religious activities.
The bench emphasized the need to maintain peace and harmony in the region, with a further hearing set for February 21. The court directed Sambhal authorities to submit a status report within two weeks.
