India delays squad announcement for England Series, Champions Trophy over fitness issues

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 11: The announcement of India’s squads for the limited-overs series against England and the upcoming Champions Trophy has been delayed due to fitness concerns surrounding two of the country's premier fast bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah.

Shami, who is set for a comeback following his right heel surgery, is expected to feature in the upcoming home series against England and the Champions Trophy. Despite a delay due to knee swelling, Shami's rehabilitation has been satisfactory, and he impressed during Bengal’s Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign. His inclusion in the squad is anticipated, along with Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh. Mukesh Kumar could also be considered if a fifth pacer is needed for the UAE conditions, which are expected to favour pace bowlers.

The situation with Bumrah is more uncertain. The selectors are awaiting a fitness report from the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru after Bumrah was sidelined by back spasms during the final Test in Sydney. Despite this, the selectors are hopeful that Bumrah will regain fitness in time for the Champions Trophy, with the possibility of replacing him if he is not ready by the time the tournament kicks off on February 19.

In terms of new faces, there are several potential changes for the 50-over Champions Trophy squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been in sensational form, could make his ODI debut against England, with the possibility of opening alongside captain Rohit Sharma, as Shubman Gill has been struggling with the bat. Shreyas Iyer is also expected to return to the squad, potentially batting at No. 4.

The selectors may also make surprise inclusions, with Sanju Samson and Nitish Kumar Reddy in contention, the latter due to his strong performances in Australia. Hardik Pandya’s fitness remains uncertain, and his absence could lead to a change in the squad.

As the selectors finalize their decisions, all eyes are on the fitness updates for Bumrah, Shami, and others as India prepares for these crucial upcoming matches.
