Chennai, Jan 11: The Tamil Nadu police have kicked off a large-scale awareness drive targeting schools and colleges across the southern districts of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, and Kanniyakumari, to combat the long-standing issue of caste discrimination.

Under the direction of director general of police (DGP) Sankar Jiwal, the initiative involves professional counsellors to address caste-related issues within the community. The decision comes after a police study revealed deep-rooted caste tensions, which often escalate into violent confrontations.

Notably, the region has experienced several caste-based killings, particularly involving intermediary castes and Dalit groups, with escalating tensions following the murder of S Mayandi near the Tirunelveli district court in December 2024.

Tirunelveli’s police force has registered multiple cases related to caste conflicts and is focusing on stringent actions against those involved in caste-based violence. Special teams have been established to monitor these cases and ensure swift convictions. In addition, security at local courts and hospitals will be increased to curb potential threats.

The police have also issued a directive to private buses in the region, banning caste-based songs, which had previously been used to glorify one caste while offending others.

In response to the rising tensions, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has promised stringent measures to address caste violence, while local authorities are monitoring the sale of weapons in the region to prevent misuse.

The police’s focus is now on creating community unity through educational campaigns, emphasizing the importance of harmony among young people, with a goal of reducing caste-based animosities and fostering understanding in the region.
