Assam, Jan 11: A 10-month-old child in Assam has been diagnosed with the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection, marking the first case of the season, as confirmed by health officials on Saturday. The child, who had been showing cold-related symptoms, was admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh four days ago and is reported to be in stable condition.

AMCH Superintendent Dr Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan explained that routine tests for flu-related infections were conducted, which led to the confirmation of HMPV. "This is a common virus, and there is no cause for alarm," Dr Bhuyan assured.

Dr Biswajit Borkakoty, senior scientist at the ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre in Lahowal, Dibrugarh, stated that since 2014, the region has seen 110 cases of HMPV, and this marks the first case of the current season. HMPV typically causes mild respiratory infections, and most patients recover without complications.
